1. Activities Report

The Commission on Local and Regional Development annual meeting was framed within the Third International Conference on Economic Geography, in Seoul, South Korea, 28 June - 1 July. The venue for the Conference was the COEX conference centre. The program was based on two sessions of which the papers details are shown below.

Besides these sessions various issues of local development were spread all over the conference sessions. We are glad that two members of the commission's steering committee were on the International Advisory Committee of the conference: Prof. Bjorn Asheim and Prof. Michael Storper. Bjorn himself was very active in the plenary sessions.

2. Future conferences

A. The 2012 annual meeting of the Commission will be held in Cologne, Germany. It will take place within the framework of the 32nd International Geographical Union congress under the theme Down to Earth. The dates are: 26-30 August 2012. Venue: University of Cologne, Cologne (Köln), Germany.

We follow past experience when we had our annual meetings in the IGU Congress in Glasgow in 2004, in the IGU Congress in Tunis 2008 and in the IGU Regional Conference Tel-Aviv in 2010.

The 32^nd International Geographical Congress will ‘focus its scientific attention on the core themes of humanity’. Further information on the conference, its organization and sub-themes are available on the website:

* I would like to inform all the corresponding members about a planned field trip to Vladivostok that we are organising in 2013 in association with the Pacific Geographical Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, located in Vladivostok. The trip will be attached to the IGU regional conference in Kyoto. Additional details will be offered as we advance with the organisation of the meeting in Kyoto and this specific field trip.

Prof. Atsushi Taira will assist the commission in organising the meeting in Kyoto. If you have any early requests and comments you can write to me or directly to Atsushi:

C. Corresponding members should be aware, that the IGU has moved to have three regional conferences, rather than one, between the four-yearly IGU Congresses. This year, there will be a regional conference in Santiago, Chile. The Cologne Congress in 2012 will be followed by meetings in Kyoto (2013), Krakow (2014), Moscow (2015), and Beijing in 2016.

D. IGU Regional Conference, Santiago, Chile, 2011

A regional IGU Conference is to be held in Santiago, Chile next month. Jurek Banski took charge to manage the sessions of the Commission on Local Development that will be held in this conference.

Date: November 14^th-18^th, 2011.

3. Publications

A. We are following the outcome of 2009 meeting and Jerzy Banski is editing another volume of Rural Studies of selected refereed papers presented at the sessions in the meeting in Tel-Aviv, July 2010. The volume is being edited at present and should be out soon.

Corresponding members who are willing to inform other members of any new publication, concerning issues of local development, written by them or any other scholar are welcome to send me the details and I'll take care to diffuse the message and the details among our members.

B. Our member Tony Sorensen is a co-editor of the Australasian Journal of Regional Studies, the journal of the Australia and New Zealand Regional Science Association. He is looking for quality articles on regional analysis and development. The content need not be Australia and New Zealand specific and can be largely theoretical. 4. Relevant information and news

A. Collaboration with other commissions:

In the past we have collaborated with other commissions, particularly in operating the annual meeting. Recently, two commission heads have approached us, suggesting a future cooperation, again on the basis of a joint annual conference. The two commissions are:

1.          Sustainability of Rural Systems

2.          Marginalization, Globalization, and Regional and Local Responses

I’ll be happy to receive your opinions on this matter, and I expect people to suggest topics that could suit and deserve such cooperation. You are welcome to offer cooperation with other commissions as well. Write to me to the following address: soferm1@biu.ac.il

B. I raise again my request. I would like to have a section in the newsletter titled NEWS FROM OUR COLLEAGUES. These may include announcements regarding forthcoming conferences, conference reports, new books and other publications, educational programs, etc. So I hereby submit a request to one and all to send us news that you think may be relevant to our activities, and wish us to spread among our members. We are particularly interested to hear about research in the realms of Local Development, program and courses that are taught in universities and research institutions, conferences that are being organized, new publications relevant to the field of local development, and other issues of interest that you would like to share with us.

We would like to increase the number of corresponding members. Please spread the news about the commission among all those persons you might think may have interest to take part in the LD commission’s future sessions. Also, please let me know if we can add any of your colleagues to the mailing list, perhaps new members in your department or others you meet at conferences interested in our activities. Names of potential corresponding people are welcome.

Conference in Santiago 2011

The International Geographical Union Regional Conference was organized in Santiago, Chile, in the period 14th to the 18th of November 2011. The venue for the Conference has been the “Liberator Bernardo O`Higgins” Military School. The meeting of the Local Development Committee accumulated many of the papers, presented in the six sessions (two days). Lecturers represented mainly Latin America, but there were also representatives from Czech Republic, Spain, USA, Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

1. Activities Report

The Commission on Local and Regional Development annual meeting was framed within the IGU Regional Conference in Israel, July 12-16. The venue for the Conference was the Dan Panorama Hotel in coastal Tel Aviv. The program was diversified and together with one joint session with the Commission on Marginalization, Globalization and Regional and Local Response with Local Development there were altogether 18 papers.

2. Future conferences

A. The 2011 annual meeting of the Commission will be held in Seoul. It will take place within the framework of the Third Global Conference on Economic Geography: Space, Economy and Environment, which will be held on 28 June - 1 July 2011, COEX, Seoul. The commission proposed theme for its sessions, and which could also serve the conference is a simple one: "Local development in a Globalized World - Issues and Implications". We had this experience in the past when we had our annual meeting in the previous Global Conference on Economic Geography in Beijing 2007. We are glad that two members of the commission's steering committee are on the International Advisory Committee of the conference: Prof. Bjorn Asheim and Prof. Michael Storper.

Date: June 2^nd-5^th, 2011.

Theme: ‘Geography: Your World – A European Perspective’.

The European Association of Geographers – EUROGEO – in collaboration with the Laboratory of Geography of the National Technical University of Athens, Greece (NTUA), is organizing its annual meeting for 2011 in Athens, Greece. The scope of the Congress is for original and innovative papers to be presented which will substantially improve, in a theoretical, conceptual or empirical way, the quality of research, learning, teaching and application in geography, as well as in promoting the significance of geography as a discipline.

The deadline for abstract submission is: January 31^st, 2011. 

3. Publications

The outcome of last year annual meeting in Warsaw was a special volume of the Journal Rural Studies edited by Jerzy Banski. Rural Studies Volume no. 20 carried the title: Socio-Economic Disparities and the Role of Local Development and contained 9 of the papers that were presented in that meeting. We are following last year’s success and Jerzy Banski is editing another volume of Rural Studies of selected refereed papers presented at the sessions in the meeting in Tel-Aviv, July 2010.

4. Relevant information
